February 23rd 2019 – A perfect Saturday – beautiful sunny day – not a cloud in the sky. A sea of girls descended on the grounds of the UT Cockrell School of Engineering to join the yearly Girl Day hosted by Women in Engineering at UT. Miss STEM’s presentation was centrally located where more than 8,000 elementary and middle school students from Austin, San Antonio and neighboring cities came in buses to experience Girl Day. Miss STEM volunteers busily demonstrated various experiments such as Elephant Toothpaste and Bioluminescent puzzles. One, two, three feet deep throngs of girls pressed in to experience Miss STEM’s hands-on activities. “Our goal is to show girls that science is fun and any girl can aspire to pursue a STEM career,” said Irissa Machetta, Miss STEM International founder. Miss STEM members and their enthusiastic personalities influenced girls to become the next generation of STEM leaders. Girl Day is one of the events Miss STEM International participate in to expand its outreach to girls around the globe. Miss STEM volunteer, Katrina summed it up, “I love Girl Day because there’s learning at each station. It makes learning about science fun and exciting. As a girl, it’s nice to feel like you finally have a voice in the science field. It’s awesome that there’s a whole day dedicated to us belonging in science.” |
